Are you a ‘Human Being’ or a ‘Human Doing’?!….are you caught up in the Auto Pilot of life?…Is stress and anxiety taking over? Are you struggling to cope with the pressures of modern living?
Mindfulness seems to be the buzz word at the moment although this effective way of living was developed in ancient times. It has been studied extensively since the late 1970’s and is a modern mental skill utilised in the workplace, at home, whilst eating, sleeping…in fact it can be integrated into all areas of your life. It is a cognitive technology available for everyone. It uses the power of meditation and being ‘in the present’ for health, well being and relaxation. I offer Mindfulness in Winchester along with hypnotherapy for a wide range of issues.
Mindfulness means “paying attention on purpose, in the present moment, with qualities like compassion, curiosity and acceptance”
My courses are based on the work of Jon Kabat-Zinn who founded the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) program at the University of Massachusetts to treat the chronically ill. This program sparked the application of mindfulness ideas and practices in Medicine for the treatment of a variety of conditions in both healthy and unhealthy people. I treat clients with mild and chronic pain at my Pain Management Clinic at The Winchester Sports and Spine Clinic, using a combination of hypnotherapy and mindfulness techniques.
Mindfulness helps us become more aware of our thoughts and feelings so that instead of feeling overwhelmed by them, we feel able to manage them. Practising mindfulness can give you a greater awareness of your emotions, boost your attention and concentration and improve relationships.
Mindfulness can also help you to:
Anyone can learn mindfulness. It’s simple, you can practise it anywhere, and the results can be life-changing.
Here is what the University of Winchester had to say about a Mindfulness workshop I ran there recently…….
“Positively YOU delivered a very engaging session on mindfulness, explaining the theory and offering very practical examples that can be used in the work place. The session was highly valued by many of the attendees and will, no doubt, help to improve their sense of wellbeing going forward.”
Karen Price, Director of Workplace Development, University of Winchester
The Study Support Teachers all benefitted from a six week course in Mindfulness, led by Mandy Papas who led us through some very enjoyable and productive sessions in the Spring Term of 2015. We all feel this has enhanced both our personal journeys and our professional practice. The main aim of the course was to learn strategies for increasing mindfulness and focus for ourselves so that we could then teach these techniques, when needed, to our students.
Below are some comments and reflections from 4 members of the team:
‘Over the weeks I became aware of changes in the way I was noticing and reacting to things happening around me. Just taking a few minutes each day was changing my behaviour and thought processes. I could also see the positive impact it was having on some students I had been working with………… As a result of the course I feel much better equipped to help my students through some very stressful situations. Mandy also provided a thorough range of tools and techniques, beyond Mindfulness, in response to issues raised and situations needing to be dealt with.’
‘An excellent learning experience which provided an uplifting mood/presence. The use of techniques such as the 3 Minute Breathing Exercise were positive and invaluable aids for supporting anxiety issues. The tools taught to us enabled both ourselves (and our students) to gain a more positive outlook and this was really appreciated…… Excellent for learning how to take care of ourselves.’
‘The course was very beneficial both as a positive and pleasurable experience for ourselves and as a toolbox of ideas for use with our students. I found that my sense of awareness and mindfulness became sharper as the weeks progressed and that I was able to ‘reframe’ situations in a more positive way. The techniques Mandy shared were very comprehensive and covered a wide range of scenarios and methods. I have been able to use many of the strategies and exercises with my own students for assisting with anxiety and focus. I was sorry when the course ended as it was so enjoyable.
‘Thank you for taking the time to meet us and to understand our needs before the course began. It was an excellent course and I feel confident that I can use the techniques learned and put them into practice when supporting students……..Thank you also for providing all the additional resources. The sessions covered far more than I had anticipated and gave me some really useful tools and strategies to support students with stress and anxiety’.
Overall, we felt that the course fulfilled all it had set out to do and had met our original expectations and more. As a group we would recommend Mandy Papas as a facilitator and tutor of Mindfulness as she was very sensitive to our needs and those of our students.
