Stress Management Hypnotherapy in Winchester

Stress management hypnotherapy in WinchesterI offer hypnotherapy for stress management in Winchester and a group of sessions can help you identify the stress in your life, the triggers that cause it and incorporate a personally-tailored lifestyle plan to cope. Studies have shown that hypnotherapy can quickly give you natural stress relief and anxiety reduction. Stress is defined as being “a condition or experience where a person perceives that the demand on them exceeds the personal and social resources they have at their disposal.”

Not all stress is bad and we need a certain amount of stress in our lives to keep us motivated ……for example to compete and win in your sport…to host an important meeting…to deliver training…to catch the bus! However if you experience certain situations which you feel unable to cope with – such as feeling overworked, unrealistic expectations from the boss, kids driving you mad, financial worries, perhaps troubled relationships many of these issues can cause stress that affects us physically and mentally.

Effects of stress

There are various health implications of stress and these may include:

  • Increased heart rate
  • Clenched jaw and teeth
  • Feelings of anger and hostility
  • Increased blood sugar
  • Increased blood pressure
  • Suspension of the digestive system
  • Reduced immune system
  • Becoming forgetful
  • Exhausted
  • Depression
  • Panic and anxiety attacks
  • Heart attacks

According to Stensrud and Stensrud, early stress researchers found that regardless of the environmental stressor, a generalized physiological response was activated in an individual and this “fight or flight”, or stress response was termed the General Adaptation Syndrome by Hans Selye.  This is our basic survival instinct as ‘ Caveman Joe’ to either run away from the tiger or stay and fight the tiger! Our heart rate increases, blood flow diverts to the parts of the body needed to fight or flight – the arms and the legs. We produce an increased amount of adrenaline as our heart rate increases.

But – what happens in today’s society when we experience the flight or fight response but haven’t had the opportunity to fight or run away? We carry that stress within us and it builds up, making us feel unwell, overwhelmed and impacts our work and personal life.

The four main ‘relievers’ that people turn to for supposed ‘stress relievers’ include alcohol, caffeine, nicotine or refined sugar but these will actually fuel your stress. All of these substances are stimulants (although alcohol is a depressant as well), they can create a temporary solution to alleviate the symptoms of stress – a feel- good factor but they actually fuel your stress – they top up your tank to allow you to feel stressed for a little longer!

Tips to manage stress

  • You can go for a walk, simply getting outside, breathing fresh air and getting away from your stressful situation can really help.
  • Learn and incorporate breathing and visualisation relaxation techniques into your daily life, they will soon become your new healthy habits and you will feel the benefits in your mind and body – they produce endorphins – the same as physical exercise.
  • Exercise – try to find time to exercise regular – this gives you more energy and produces endorphins and will give your mind and body that feel good factor. Exercise also gives you a welcome break from the issues that are causing you stress.
  • Look at your time management – are you always procrastinating, feeling overwhelmed with too much to do? By completing a time prioritisation graph and sticking to it, you can focus on those urgent and important tasks first, without distractions. Set yourself a timer on your phone to stick to tasks and get them done in a set time. Avoid distractions – switch off Facebook and don’t look at phone texts until your task is completed!
  • Talk to someone – “a problem shared is a problem halved” – an old cliché but so true! Just by talking to someone about stress that is affecting you can help and you can begin to see a way through.
